Hollywood band aids

On August 2nd, 2020 it was announced that actor Ryan Reynolds would be launching a Diversity Mentorship program that will sponsor 10 to 20 trainees of all ages who are black, indigenous, people of color or from marginalized communities "in the hopes of making the film industry stronger and more dynamic with previously untapped talent." The program will be funded by the Actors own salary and provide for their housing and pay while they are gain real life hands on experience on set. An amazing opportunity for the 10 to 20 individuals chosen, but realistically a band aid on the bullet wound that is diversity in Hollywood.

Bringing diversity to Film and Television has been an uphill battle for the last 30 years and while ground has been made over the last few, the lack of diversity in front of and behind the camera is still a problem. That latest statistics on Minorities in Television and Film show that:

  • For the 2016-2017 season the share of Black roles for cable scripted shows was 15.9%

  • For the 2016-2017 season the share of Latino roles for broadcast scripted shows was 6.2%

  • In 2017 Minority movie writers made up 7.8%

  • In 2017 White Female Show Runners made up 18% for new TV shows

  • In 2019 White movie Directors made up 84.9%

Ryan Reynold's Diversity Mentorship program is one of a few that have been created to bring diversity to the Television and Film Industry, but for creatives like myself who have to provide for others, these programs are simply not an option. The risk in taking the leap to join this or any of the other program and leave a steady 9-2-5 gig that provides for family is not worth it especially when there are so few opportunities.

where does 925 creatives fit in?

There are so many creative people in this world who don't have the opportunity to create. They don't live in the right city, they don't know the right people, and bottom line they just don't have access to other creative people that they need to create... until 925 Creatives.

925 Creatives was born from the need for an influx of diverse new talent in front of and behind the screen. We are living in unprecedented times and it is time to take on this industry on unprecedented terms. The goal of 925 Creatives is to come together from where ever you are to work on and develop projects entirely remotely. You would be working at your pace, on your own time with people who have talents that compliment your own, and the goal is to develop each project fully. Acting like any Hollywood studio, 925 Creatives is here to help fund each project and get them completed.

founder

I go by meghan X. wilson. I hold a Bachelors Radio and Television from the University of Central Florida. I moved to New York and worked on over 30 projects in almost every department for 3 years. I left the business in 2016 and moved back to Central Florida because I couldn't provide the steady support my family needed working Freelance. I now work a 9-2-5 steady gig but would like to take what I learned and share it with the next generation of diverse Creatives.

After leaving the business I spent some time working in the Non-Profit world where I found my purpose in helping others. My passion is story telling and everything that goes into getting that to the big screen. My purpose is helping others. 925 Creatives is a beautiful amalgamation of the two and I am excited to take on this journey with all of you.

"Don't become too attached to your own myopia. Just because you've found a way to do things doesn't mean it's the way to do things."
